Caitlyn Jenner to speak at LGBT event during Republican National Convention
Caitlyn Jenner will speak at an LGBT brunch during the Republican National Convention.
Trans Republican Caitlyn Jenner will be speaking at an LGBT brunch in Cleveland – the site of the Republican National Convention, later this month.
The event – called the ‘Big Tent Brunch’ – will showcase Republican support for LGBT rights and discuss the work still needed to bring “full freedom and equality opportunity.”
The brunch is being held on July 20 under the Big Tent at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and will be hosted by a Republican nonprofit organisation called the American Unity Fund.
“The party conventions are like the political Olympics, and I’m excited to be headed to Cleveland to stand with my fellow LGBT Republicans and allies,” Jenner said in a statement to The Daily Beast.
She added that she has no intentions to attend the convention.
Talk show host and Republican activist Montell Williams will also attend and announce Jenner at the brunch.
“There are a few misguided lawmakers who have lost sight of the fact that anything short of full freedom for our LGBT neighbours, friends, and co-workers is a threat to the freedom of all of us,” Williams said.
“Like Vice President Dick Cheney stated, ‘Freedom means freedom for everyone.’”
Jenner originally supported Texas Sen. Ted Cruz for the Republican nomination before he dropped out of the race, but has recently commented that Trump is “very much” backing LGBT rights.
“He seems very much behind the LGBT community because of what happened in North Carolina with the bathroom issue. He backed the LGBT community,” she said.
Earlier this month, however, the presumptive nominee said he now supports the anti-transgender HB2.
