Homophobic flyers warn against gay ‘death curse’ and rape in public bathrooms
The leaflet claims improving LGBT rights will lead to an increase in rape and paedophilia.
A number of disturbing anti-LGBT election flyers were handed out during Australia’s recent elections, claiming homosexuality was a ‘death curse,’ as gay people died without having children.
The flyers – printed in Mandarin and promoting the Christian Democratic Party – also said that allowing transgender people to use the bathroom of their choice would increase instances of rape.
It adds that a Labor victory in the elections would have seen the removal of male and female public toilets.
“If any man thinks he is a female, he can go to the female toilet legally, even in the school,” the note reads.
“Therefore, criminals and rapists will have the chance to pretend to be a transgender female to enter a female toilet.
“You can imagine the female toilet will be a place where women are being raped.”
The flyer also includes a list of all parities’ marriage equality policies, suggesting the electorate vote the Christian Democratic Party (CDP) into Senate.
However, a spokesperson for the CDP told BuzzFeed News they did not know who had distributed the flyers and that they had been careful to authorise all of the party’s material.
“People have gone off on their own and done it,” they said.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has promised to hold a plebiscite by the end of the year , but may believe this was only to win over more conservative members of his party, the Liberal National Coalition (LNC), which looks to become the biggest party following Australia’s rare double dissolution election.
However, Australian Labor Party leader Bill Shorten has said he hopes to bring in same-sex marriage without a public vote.
Mr Shorten said he wants to hold Mr Turnbull to his conscience and support a bill to introduce marriage equality, without forcing the public to the polls, after many claimed the vote would lead to an onslaught of anti-LGBT abuse.
