Brisbane’s new rainbow footpath a bright dedication to the LGBT community
Brisbane has unveiled a rainbow footpath to promote inclusion, diversity, and pride.
If you’re walking around the city of Brisbane, Australia you might stumble upon a colourful homage to the LGBT community.
The city down under has just unveiled a rainbow footpath that serves as a “symbol of inclusion and diversity” in front of the iconic LGBT-friendly Sportsman Hotel.
The city council has also mounted a plaque next to the path that reads:
“Brisbane is a place where our differences are celebrated and our similarities unite us, where we value our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community. This rainbow artwork is a symbol of inclusion and diversity, and a call to end prejudice and discrimination.”
The Brisbane LGBTIQ Action Group originally proposed to have rainbow colours painted on the roadway last year.
However, road regulations did not permit this plan, so the artwork was installed in its location on Leichardt Street in Spring Hill.
A member of the LGBTIQ Action Group, John Ebert, said the footpath “is a sign that all Brisbane citizens are respected and celebrates the contributions that members of the LGBTI community make to our city.”
Brisbane is actually the second city in Australia to decorate its footways in the colours of the rainbow.
In 2014, similar works of art were made permanent in Melbourne following the International AIDS conference.
Australia is currently in a complicated battle to pass marriage equality.
Labor Party leader, Bill Shorten, said he hopes to bring in same-sex marriage without a public vote, but Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has promised to hold a plebiscite by the end of the year.
