Watch: Colbert mocks anti-LGBT Republicans in campy musical send-up
Stephen Colbert performed an epic campy musical send-up to the Republican National Convention.
The Late Show host unveiled the musical tribute last night as the Republican National Convention gets underway in Cleveland, Ohio.
Donald Trump and anti-LGBT Governor Mike Pence are set to be confirmed as the party’s Presidential ticket at the event, while the Republican platform will be passed, containing some of the most hostile anti-gay provisions seen in years.
The platform rejects attempts to ban ‘gay cure’ therapy for minors. claiming “parents should be free to make medical decisions about their children without interference” – while also insisting: “Natural marriage between a man and a woman is most likely to result in offspring who do not become drug-addicted or otherwise damaged.”
It calls for the Supreme Court ruling on equal marriage to be reversed, opposes transgender rights legislation, and calls for ‘religious freedom’ laws to permit anti-LGBT legislation.
Colbert performed a traditional Broadway send-up during last night’s Late Show.
Referring to the venue, Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena, he joked: “It’s the Q, but let’s be clear, Q doesn’t stand for Queer!
“Though it really doesn’t matter, there aren’t many of them here.”
He took aim at the lack of diversity, adding: “We’ll see wacky hat, crazy ties, worn by thousands of white guys, an entire airplane hanger filled with Donald Trump’s ex-wives.
“We’ll see Newt, Ron and Rand, maybe members of the Klan, but no Muslims or Latinos because I think they’ve all be banned.”
Of course, it all ends with a synchronised Christmas-themed dance number, as every Republican meeting does.
Colbert found himself ejected from the Convention podium earlier this week when he invaded the stage dressed as eccentric Hunger Games character and TV host Caesar Flickerman.
Before being ejected from the stage, he joked: “It is my honour to begin the official Republican National Convention Hungry for Power Games!”
As he was removed, he yelled at the security guards: “Look, I know I’m not supposed to be up here, but let’s be honest, neither is Donald Trump!”
