Chris Christie slams ‘grandstanding’ boycott of North Carolina over anti-LGBT law
Donald Trump ally Chris Christie has accused the NBA of “grandstanding” by moving an All-Star Game out of North Carolina over an anti-LGBT law.
North Carolina lost a string of big investment ventures over Governor Pat McCrory’s decision to sign the contentious HB 2 – which voided all local ordinances protecting LGBT rights, banned transgender people from using their preferred bathroom, and permits businesses to discriminate against LGBT people on the grounds of religious belief.
McCrory continues to insist the anti-trans rules are “common sense”, but the state has faced a string of lawsuits, as LGBT groups believe HB 2 to be a clear violation of the US Constitution.
The NBA recently confirmed it would be moving its 2017 All-Star Game out of the state over concerns that LGBT players, employees and fans would be left without protection under the law.
But New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Donald Trump’s notorious #1 supporter, says the move is just “grandstanding”.
According to NJ.com, he fumed: “Are they going to evaluate every law in every state or is it just a certain law?
“I know what it is… it’s grandstanding by the NBA, and that’s what they do.”
Perhaps it’s just the homophobic and transphobic laws Chris – you know, the ones your party keeps on trying to pass with undisclosed help from your friendly neighbourhood hate groups.
Christie was previously seen as a moderate on LGBT rights within the Republican Party, refusing to waste money defending a gay marriage ban, opposing anti-LGBT ‘religious freedom’ laws, and signing a law to ban ‘gay cure’ therapy.
However, he has gone back on many of his stances since hitching himself to the Trump Wagon – giving up principles to stand behind Trump looking gormless at rallies (and not even getting to be Vice President like he wanted).
