Jennifer Lopez to play notorious bisexual drug lord the ‘Cocaine Godmother’ in new biopic
The singer will star as the infamous Griselda Blanco in an upcoming HBO biopic.
Jennifer Lopez is set to play the notorious Griselda Blanco – also known as the ‘Cocaine Godmother’ – in an upcoming film.
J-Lo will serve as both the lead actress and executive producer of the TV movie, which will chart the rise of the openly bisexual drug lord.
“I’ve been fascinated by the life of this corrupt and complicated woman for many years,” Lopez said in a statement.
“The idea of teaming with HBO felt like the perfect fit for finally bringing Griselda’s story to life.”
The film focus Blanco’s colourful life, charting her rise to prominence following a youth spent in the slums of Columbia.
She went on to revolutionise the US drug trade during the 1970s and 1980s – becoming one the most powerful female criminals of all time.
‘The Black Widow’ – who allegedly killed two of her husbands – spent almost two decades in prison.
She died in 2012 after being shot.
The ‘Godmother’ was open about her bisexuality, taking a host of both male and female lovers.
Lopez is a strong supporter of the LGBT, winning a GLAAD award for TV series The Fosters, on which she also serves as executive producer.
The show – now in its fourth season – focuses on a lesbian couple trying to raise a family.
The singer says she was inspired to get involved with the show because of her lesbian aunt, who she says faced ongoing discrimination and homophobia throughout her life.
Lopez also recently teamed up with Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda for a gay love anthem, in support of victims of the Orlando massacre, many of whom were Latin American.
