The Flash and Supergirl are getting a superhero musical cross-over, gay character coming out
There’s going to be a superhero musical cross-over starring the Flash and Supergirl .
The announcement was made by the CW’s Greg Berlanti – who executive produces a number of superhero TV shows, including Arrow (Stephen Amell), The Flash (Grant Gustin) and most recently Supergirl (Melissa Benoist).
Speaking to reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour, he revealed that a two-episode crossover was in the works, featuring stars from across The Flash and Supergirl.
Berlanti hinted: “There will be a musical crossover. There’s going to be a musical pair of episodes in the back half of the year between Supergirl and Flash. We have a number of people who can sing from all shows making appearances.”
There are a number of tested musical stars across the superhero universe: Grant Gustin appeared on Glee, Supergirl’s Jeremy Jordan is a former alum of ‘Smash’, while Arrow villain John Barrowman – who recently signed a deal to appear across all the shows – is a theatrical veteran.
He teased that the show may take the route of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Scrubs in previous musical elements – by working the music directly into the plot.
The TV exec said: “We’ve toyed with who potentially the villain could be.
“My sense is we’ll be very careful about how it is they’ll break into song. There’ll probably be an element of being inside a character’s head sometimes.
“It’s many episodes away but we are going to start combing through the music and talking about the possibilities. Victor [Garber, who appears on The Flash] was pitching me some songs the other night at dinner.”
He added: “I think they’re going to be mostly pre-existing songs.
“We have been talking about trying to write at least one original song per episode, and certainly happy to take requests throughout the year.”
Elsewhere, he teased that a major character on one of the shows would come out.
As the musical episodes are expected in the “back half” of the TV calendar, they are expected to air between January and May 2017.
Berlanti told E Online: “It is a significant character, we’re not trying to be coy about it.
“The only reason we [don’t want to say who] is we really want the audience to enjoy the character development and not necessarily be ahead of the storyline.I think it’s important that people know we want to include a character who happens to be gay in the show. “We didn’t get to the story. We just didn’t have enough real estate to deal with it in the way that we wanted to deal with it.
“So this year, when we were planning this season, we said to the network and studio that it was a priority for us. And everyone was cool with it.”
It was also revealed this week that animated new spinoff series will follow an out gay superhero with some pretty cool powers.
Freedom Fighters: The Ray will debut on The CW’s digital channel next year – making it the fifth show in the ‘Arrowverse’.
