Amber Heard donates Johnny Depp’s $7 million divorce settlement to charity
The actress will donate half of her multi-million dollar divorce payout to a domestic violence charity.
Amber Heard has announced she will donate her $7 million divorce settlement from Johnny Depp to two charities – including a group that tackles domestic violence.
The actress will give half of the settlement to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to prevent violence against women, and half to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles – where she has volunteered for the past ten years.
Heard says she hopes to “help those less able to defend themselves”, after she earlier accused Depp of striking her and throwing a mobile phone at her – allegations he later denied.
The Aquaman star – who filed for divorce from Depp in May, citing irreconcilable differences – said the money donated to the ACLU would have a “particular focus to stop violence against women”.
“As reported in the media, the amount received in the divorce was $7 million and $7 million is being donated.
“I know these organisations will put the funds to good use and look forward to continuing to support them in the future,” she added.
“Hopefully, this experience results in a positive change in the lives of people who need it the most.”
Anthony Romero – executive director of the ACLU – said that the charity was “incredibly grateful”.
In a joint statement with Depp on August 16, Heard said the relationship was “intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love.”
“Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm.”
Earlier this year, Heard spoke out about her sexual orientation, saying it was not defined by her marriage to Depp.
The actress came out in 2010 and later married Depp – who last year said all of his characters are gay – adopting his two children.
