Girl claims she’ll fail gym because trans students are allowed in the locker rooms
A 13-year-old girl is helping her Christian mother battle against anti-discrimination protections for transgender teens.
The Obama administration intervened earlier this year year after a string of laws attempted to roll back LGBT discrimination protections, purportedly to stop trans people from going to the bathroom.
The federal government wrote to every school in the US to advise them that they are obliged not to discriminate against trans people, issuing a directive in support of trans rights.
Amid a court battle over the issue, one Pennsylvania 13-year-old has waded in to claim her rights are being violated by transgender people.
Sigourney Coyle, who attends Emmaus High School, made the claim at an East Penn School Board meeting on Monday, in a bid to get them to ban trans people from female bathrooms.
The girl chooses to sit out of gym class “for religious reasons” citing Obama’s directive, although there aren’t actual transgender students in her class.
But Coyle now claims she is being discriminated against because she might fail gym.
According to Buzzfeed, she claimed: “I feel nothing against transgenders… I would just not like their rights to overrule my own.
“Gym requires us to participate to pass high school and if I don’t change I am not allowed to participate.
“So my options are to let myself be discriminated against or fail gym for not participating and not pass through high school, which would jeopardise my future.”
“I am a woman, and I identify as a woman, and you can’t make me change in front of someone who I don’t identify with, who is physically male.”
Her mother, Ann Coyle, said: “I will NOT stand by while the law dictates that male bodies are allowed to walk into my daughters locker room, undress next to her, and shower alongside of her.
“Whether or not the male bodies are covered in pants or skirts is irrelevant. They have no place in her locker room.
“I told her that if they refuse to withdraw her, but she stands up for what is right, refusing to participate, I will be proud of that failing grade in gym, and so would any Christian college.”
Again, there are zero actual transgender people in Coyle’s class.
The Obama administration directive has been temporarily blocked by an injunction amid the court battle.
