Canada’s biggest fair says ‘we don’t care’ where you pee
Canada’s largest national fair has stood up for trans people by introducing an awesome gender-inclusive bathroom sign.
The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) in Toronto, which attracts thousands of attendees every year, has adopted gender-neutral restrooms with a sign that reads, “we don’t care”.
As well as the usual rides, food stalls and shopping events, general manager of CNE, Virginia Ludy, said the signs had received a great deal of praise.
She said the event was looking for something that reflected the new bathroom policy and discovering the signs, made by artist Peregrine Honig, it was agreed they’d work perfectly.
“We thought it said exactly what we wanted to say. It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman, you can use this washroom,” she told Mashable.
When discussing the difference between things like the line outside men and women’s toilets, she added: “We really wanted to design washrooms that could be used by anybody at any time.”
Ludy said she was surprised at how positive the feedback of the signs had been once photographs hit social media.
She said: “I think that we, as an event, want to be fair to everybody and so if we can design washrooms that are a little bit more private and accommodating for our customers, that don’t make them uncomfortable because of the facilities they think they should be using or not using, or how the public will react, then that’s a good thing.”
Although the signs might be new to Toronto, a number of businesses in North Carolina adopted them after the passage of HB2 – that restricted the bathroom rights of transgender people.
