A US college professor’s response to a student’s homophobic tweet has gone viral after he responded to him in the best way.

Eric Mendenhall, an assistant professor of Genetics at the University of Alabama, decided to act after one of his students posted a tweet that said, “My genetics teacher is a faggot”.

Although his Twitter handle wasn’t used, Mendenhall picked up on the tweet and replied to his student.

He said: “I don’t condone use of that term and it has no bearing on my ability to teach you genetics [student’s twitter handle]. See you Thursday.”

The reply has now racked up more than 30,000 shares and likes with hundreds of people praising the professor’s response.

After noticing he had become a viral sensation, Mendenhall added: “each generation shedding some of the hate and bigotry of their parents’ generation is a key part of being human”.

Mendenhall also said that the tweet would have no impact on his grades.

Just an hour after the genetics professor replied to the tweet, the student made his account private.

Earlier this month, Twitter announced new tools that will help people tackle harassment.

Last month, the gay editor of Breitbart, Milo Yiannopoulos, was banned from the platform for repeated racial abuse.
