Donald Trump is selling $30 ‘LGBTQ’ t-shirts despite his anti-LGBTQ platform
Donald Trump is flogging ‘LGBTQ’ t-shirts despite his anti-LGBTQ policy commitments.
Mr Trump was previously a lukewarm supporter of LGBT rights, but has changed his stance repeatedly during the campaign in a bid to appeal to the broad Republican base.
In recent months the Republican Presidential nominee has pledged to appoint justices to repeal equal marriage, come out in favour of North Carolina’s anti-trans bathroom law, and hinted at ‘religious freedom’ laws to permit anti-LGBT discrimination.
His Vice Presidential hopeful Mike Pence is an avowed opponent of LGBT rights, while some of his policy advisers, like Tea Party politician Michele Bachmann, harbour extreme anti-gay views.
He has also become the first Presidential hopeful in more than a decade to accept an invite to speak from the anti-gay Family Research Council, while rubber-stamping a national Republican platform that supports ‘gay cure’ therapy.
Trump has listed exactly zero pro-LGBT policy commitments.
With all that in mind, we simply can’t possibly begin to fathom why Trump is selling ‘LGBTQ for Trump’ t-shirts on his official website.
Presumably for people who have never read any of the above, the Republican hopeful is selling a “Trump Pride Men’s Tee” for $30.
It invites people to “Show your pride and your support for Trump with this exclusive equality tee.”
There’s also a set of pin badges bearing the same design for $5.
Mr Trump did mention LGBTQ people in one speech last month, in which he struggled to read the initials “L-G-B-T-Q” off a teleprompter, while putting air quotes around the Q. In the speech he made no commitment to LGBTQ rights, instead using LGBTQ people to attack ISIS.
Within a week of the speech, he rallied with anti-LGBT pastors.
