Anti-gay Republican Rick Perry signs up for Dancing with the Stars
After his run for President collapsed, homophobic former Texas Governor Rick Perry has signed on to reality show Dancing With The Stars.
Serving as Governor of Texas from 2000 until 2015, Perry is most remembered for his extreme anti-LGBT stances and string of ill-fated Presidential bids.
Perry led the charge against gay people being allowed to serve in the military, releasing a notorious ad during the 2012 Republican primary claiming there’s “something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas”.
It was announced today that he will appear on season 23 of celebrity dance show Dancing with the Stars, partnered with professional dancer Emma Slater.
The show broke down barriers last season by featuring same-sex dance couples for the first time – but it’s unlikely Perry will be doing the foxtrot with any other men (in public, at least).
Perry dropped out of the Republican Presidential race last September, after his openly homophobic campaign failed to catch on with voters.
The former Governor launched an attack on the Boy Scouts of America while running for the nomination, after the organisation opted to end a ban on openly gay scoutmasters.
He claimed: “I believe that scouting would be better off if they didn’t have openly gay scoutmasters.”
He also earned flack for comparing homosexuality to alcoholism .
He had claimed: “Whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not, you have the ability to decide not to do that.
“I may have the genetic coding that I’m inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that, and I look at the homosexual issue the same way.”
He joins rapper Vanilla Ice, model Amber Rose and disgraced Olympian Ryan Lochte.
