Perth to host its first queer film festival
Perth is set to hold its first queer film festival in September.
Several films will premiere at the event which will celebrate the best of LGBTQI cinema.
Festival director, Mark Reid, explained that the chosen films don’t revolve around fairy tale romances that end happily ever after. The original films range drama to comedy, and explore the modern lives of LGBTQI people across the world.
Reid said: “I didn’t want to put films in the festival that were happy ever after films… it needed to be gritty, it needed to show the depth of filmmaking that’s still happening out there.”
The provocative films have been curated from across the globe. Film makers from the USA, South Africa, the Netherlands and Germany are showcasing their work.
International Emmy nominated ‘Boys’ is just one of the many films in the line up of the festival.
‘Jonathan’, ‘Daddy’, ‘While You Weren’t Looking’, ‘Those People’ and ‘Like Cattle Towards Glow’ are all featuring at the September queer festival.
Canadian comedy ‘Portrait of a Serial Monogamist’, which has been described as ‘High Fidelity for lesbians’, also joins the line up.
The festival will work with Backlot Perth Studios and the WA AIDS Council and proceeds made from the event will go towards the charity.
The festival is not the first Queer festival to showcase in Australia. The Melbourne Queer film festival boasts being the longest running queer film festival in Australia.
The festival will run from the 9th-15th of September.
