A school actually set this homophobic maths question that claims ‘God intended’ people to be straight
A school has apologised over a homophobic maths question that was handed out to pupils.
Students at a grammar school in Buckinghamshire were shocked to see casual homophobia on a monthly maths quiz.
It asks: “If in a town 70% of the men are married to 90% of the women (and each marriage is between one man and one woman, as God intended when he made humans male and female) what percentage of the adult population is married?”
The question came from the maths department at Royal Grammar School High Wycombe, and was drawn up by a now-retired teacher.
A student at the school told PinkNews that several people had been shocked to see the homophobic question.
The student, who did not wish to be named, told PinkNews: “I often hear off homophobic comments from teachers, but this was the first time it has happened like this.
“There is a tiny proportion of LGBT students… I could count all the ones I know on my hands.”
A separate student explained on Reddit that the questions were drawn up by a now-retired teacher who is “a caricature of conservative Christianity”, though the school is officially secular.
The school confirmed that the quiz was genuine.
Headmaster Philip Wayne told the Bucks Free Press: “I’m sorry on behalf of the whole school community of governors, staff and boys for any offence this has caused.”
He added that the test was “quickly withdrawn from the department” when issues were raised, and the former teacher will not be returning.
The school’s equality policy states that “all staff” must not “discriminate on grounds of ethnicity, disability, or other equality issues”.
It adds: “We are committed to eliminating discrimination, promoting equality and celebrating diversity.
“We aim to give all our students every opportunity to achieve their personal best by fulfilling their potential academically, spiritually, morally, socially, and culturally.
“Within this ethos of achievement, we do not tolerate bullying and harassment of any kind.
“We aim to ensure that the school values and celebrates the individuality of all our students and staff, respective of age, disability, gender (including gender reassignment), marital/civil partnership status, pregnancy/maternity status, ethnicity, religion/belief or sexual orientation.”
Ed: We think the answer to the question is 79 percent, in case anyone is wondering.
