Matilda star ‘very upset’ about how she came out
Mara Wilson, the star of the hit kids’ film Matilda has said she was left feeling “upset” about the way she came out as bisexual.
The childhood actress, who has not performed since 2000, has around 300,000 followers on Twitter and admitted she didn’t expect to feel the way she did after answering a question about her sexuality on the social media site.
Following the attack in Orlando in June, the 29-year-old came out as bisexual by posting a picture of herself in a gay bar, aged 18. With the picture, she said the LGBT community felt like home, “especially a few years later when I, uh, learned something about myself”.
When asked if she was coming out as bisexual, she replied she was two on the Kinsey scale – effectively saying yes.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, she said she questioned why she had come out that way.
“I was very upset for a few days. I was like, ‘How could I have done this?’ It was an impulsive decision. It was definitely an impulsive, emotional decision. I did not expect it to trend on Facebook,” she told the magazine.
She added that if she could do it again she would not have come out that way. She said: “No. Ideally, I was wishing it would be because I was dating Janelle Monáe or something.”
Wilson admitted she was shocked by the attention she received to coming out, making headlines around the world. She took a few days off Twitter, saying she had been left “panicked”.
The 90s child star featured in a number of classic children’s films including, Mrs Doubtfire and Miracle on 34th Street. Though when her mother died during the filming of Matilda, she retreated from Hollywood and was later diagnosed with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder).
Last year, she attacked the director of the film, Stonewall, for whitewashing the production.
