Sexual health campaigners are using Pokemon Go to ‘lure’ people to Chlamydia tests
Sexual health campaigners are placing down ‘lures’ in Pokemon Go to give people condoms and Chlamydia tests.
The massively popular mobile game Pokémon Go sees players travel around the real world in search of virtual Pokémon, allowing them to take part in gym battles and seek out PokéStops.
Players can also pay to place strategic ‘lures’ at real-world locations to increase the number of Pokémon there – and HIV charity Terrence Higgins Trust is seizing the opportunity to talk to people about sexual health.
The charity, which is holding a Pokémon-themed Sexual Health Week across Suffolk.
It says: “The week will end with three ‘Lure parties’ at Pokestops in Ipswich, Lowestoft and Bury St Edmunds on Friday 16 September from 6-8pm.
“Young people can lure and catch Pokemon at these locations, as well as earning Pokecoins.
“Pikachu and sexual health specialists will also be on hand to talk about protecting against STIs, guidance on signing up for a C-card for access to free condoms and lube, and chlamydia testing.
Terrence Higgins Trust Suffolk Service Manager Sian Haddon-Berry said: “We are really looking forward to celebrating Sexual Health Week with our Pokemon helpers who will encourage Suffolk residents to look after their sexual health.
“We hope the Pokemon theme will appeal to young people who are disproportionately affected by STIs.
“It should be a fantastic week with lots of activities and giveaways, and of course we will be providing advice, information and answering any questions people might have on HIV and sexual health.”
