Clare Balding and Davina McCall pegged for Bake Off as Mel and Sue depart
Clare Balding and Davina McCall is being considered as the host of the Great British Bake Off, after Mel and Sue handed in their notice over the show’s departure from the BBC.
Bake Off fans were already furious with the news that the reality show, which has aired on the BBC since 2010, would be leaving the broadcaster .
The BBC was outbid for the show’s rights, with Channel 4 thought to have spent at least £25 million to snag it.
It was unclear whether Channel 4 would be able to secure the show’s key talents as well, but it has since been confirmed that hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc will not return to the show.
Now, according to the Mirror, Channel 4 bosses are looking into whether Davina McCall to host the show.
An insider tells the paper: “Davina is already golden girl at Channel 4 after working on some of its biggest hits and so is at the top of bosses’ wishlist.”
Mel and Sue are not the only talents from the show expected to depart, as it is unclear whether Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood will remain on the show after it leaves the BBC.
The popular baking show has risen to incredible heights, winning over more viewers than the Olympics.
Some had thought Alexander Armstrong, of Pointless fame, would take over as host, as he tweeted yesterday: “A very special announcement happening tomorrow.”
But this was not the case, as it turned out he was tweeting about his new album.
Others pegged were comedian Sarah Millican and Jo Brand.
Fans got emotional on Wednesday after it was announced that the comedy duo Mel and Sue would leave, tweeting their sadness and that they wanted to make the most of their last episodes hosting.
