Republican Steve King: Evidence for gay parenting could be fake, like global warming research
Republican congressman Steve King has insisted that new child tax benefits should only be for ‘natural’ heterosexual families.
Trump’s ‘Family First’ plans would make child care expenses tax deductible and guarantee six weeks of paid childcare leave.
The plan would already deny leave rights to gay dads and single fathers – but Iowa congressman Steve King is furious that gay families would still be eligible for tax benefits.
Rep. King told CNN: “I want to respect all people, but I want to promote the natural family, and I think that’s the most wholesome thing we can do.
“The natural family is a man and a woman joined together hopefully in holy matrimony, blessed by God with children.”
Asked why he would deny benefits to LGBT families when research shows their children are just as healthy, he added: “I think I’d want to look a little further into that research. We got down the global warming argument and found out there’s another side to that equation too.
“I’m not looking at that research and I would want to look at it.
“I want to respect all human persons who are all gifts from God, but I want to encourage the natural family.
“That’s the best and most wholesome way to raise a child and that’s been the case throughout thousands of years of human history and we need to go with what works.”
King has taken the torch from Michele Bachmann as one of the most homophobic lawmakers in Congress.
He recently tried to ban trans people from using the toilets in the US Capitol Building in a hostile finance bill amendment.
Previously, he offered to marry gay people to his lawnmower.
The Obama administration has intervened on LGBT rights last month after a string of laws attempted to roll back LGBT discrimination protections, purportedly to stop trans people from going to the bathroom.
The federal government wrote to every school in the US to advise them that they are obliged not to discriminate against trans people.
However, that hasn’t gone down well with hard-right Republicans – with GOP politicians in Oklahoma attempting to impeach Obama. 11 Republican-controlled states are also suing the President for his intervention.
