Spotify adds non-binary to registration forms
Spotify has added non-binary to its registration forms in an industry first.
The music streaming service has unveiled new registration forms that allow users to choose from male, female and non-binary.
The option of a third gender will only be available in the US, UK, Sweden, New Zealand and Australia, but the company is hopeful it will be available elsewhere soon.
The change was announced on a Tumblr post where it said the request for the additional options had been made over three years ago.
“We’re thrilled to announce the availability of a non-binary sign-up option to Spotify,” the company said in response to the change.
“We’ve enabled non-binary sign up to Spotify on Android in the UK, US, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand. The option will follow in more markets and iOS soon. Enjoy!”
In countries where Spotify hasn’t added the option, the service will allow users to contact them and remove their gender information from their accounts.
Spotify has long been a supporter of the LGBT community. Last year, it featured a same-sex couple on one of its adverts.
A study from earlier this year also found that LGBT people are twice as likely to use platforms, such as Spotify, compared to their heterosexual counterparts.
