This is what happens when you set up a legal ‘no gays’ food truck in North Carolina
The Daily Show is testing out North Carolina’s anti-LGBT law in practise – by setting up a homophobic fast food truck.
North Carolina has lost a string of big investment ventures over Governor Pat McCrory’s decision to sign the contentious HB 2 – which voided all local ordinances protecting LGBT rights, banned transgender people from using their preferred bathroom, and permits businesses to discriminate against LGBT people on the grounds of religious belief.
McCrory has continued to insist the rules are “common sense”, but a string of major employers are boycotting the state over the attack on the rights of their LGBT employees.
To emphasise the impact of the law beyond just bathrooms, Comedy Central’s Daily Show decided to legally set up a fast food truck in the state that refuses to serve gay people.
Roy Wood Jr explained: “I wanted to show North Carolinians what HB2 would look like in action so I rented a food truck made up a fake barbecue company and set out to refuse service to people by telling them they’re gay.
“Let’s be clear, I don’t care if they’re gay but HB2 says I can do this Jim Crow-level s**t and nobody can stop me.
“Time for North Carolina to try a little bit of the bone brothers, flame and barbecue.”
Setting up the truck with correspondent Jordan Klepper, the pair take issue with a man who tries to order a barbeque sandwich.
Klepper tells him: “You can’t just throw it in everybody’s face. We’re not going to serve you. We’re discriminating you because you’re gay.”
When the customer insists he has been married to a woman for 22 years, they responds “Whatever you want to tell yourself at night, man.
“I got a weird vibe. That’s all we need. Sorry.”
After refusing to serve a few customers for ‘homosexuality’, Wood quips: “It’s fun here, you can say whatever the f**k you want.
“Is this what being white is like? You just tell people no for no reason?”
Everyone featured in the skit did actually get free food after the prank was revealed.
