Triplets with DNA from both of their gay dads born after rare pregnancy

New fathers Justin Ruehs and Adam Smeets have welcomed a set of triplets, who have DNA from both fathers, to their home.
The surrogate mother was implanted with embryos with DNA from both dads. Neither of the parents expected to the outcome of triplets, let alone the bizarre phenomenon of the children having DNA from each dad.
The couple have had a four year long journey to get to the point where they’re at now. At first, they were deterred from becoming parents because of laws preventing the couple even getting married, but not they’re proud parents.
Justin said to CBS Chicago: “They’re genetically half-siblings. They’re going to look alike. I think it will be good for them.”
“We represent that gay couples have families, and families are not defined as just one thing or another. It comes in many different shapes and sizes too,” he added.
It’s not the first time this has happened unexpectedly to a couple. PinkNews previously reported on a couple in South Africa who became biological fathers of a set of triplets when two eggs were fertilised, each with sperm from the two fathers, and one egg split into twins.
Last month, the world’s first biological ‘three-parent’ baby born. The baby boy has two mothers and one father, as a surrogate egg was used with the mothers nucleus. The procedure was carried out to ensure that the mother would not pass on Leigh syndrome, a fatal disorder that affects the developing nervous system.
Last year, a gay couple in the UK won a battle to have a baby girl conceived through surrogacy returned to them – after the mother claimed she did not know the men were gay before she gave birth.
