A man asked an advice columnist why women don’t shave their arms, she wasn’t having any of it
An advice columnist was shocked to receive a question about why women don’t shave their arms in her inbox, but how she responded is just perfect.
Amy Dickinson responded via her syndicated advice column ‘Ask Amy’ to a man who asked why a lot of women don’t shave their hairy arms.
The man named ‘Curious Guy’ asked: “Why don’t women typically remove the hair on their arms (elbow to wrist)?… Not all women have hairy arms, but I’ve seen many women who have a decent amount of noticeable hair on their forearms.”
He goes on saying some blonde hairs are “very noticeable in the sunlight”, and that arm hair is very visible when women wear t-shirts.
“I’m just curious as to why women would shave their legs, but walk around with hairy arms. I’m not hating on it, I’m just curious,” he adds.
Amy Dickinson, who commands a circulation of something like 22 million readers in over 150 newspapers, quickly took him to task.
She responds with brutal honesty: “Maybe women don’t shave their forearms because they have to work an extra 60 days a year in order to earn the same pay as a man in the same job.
“That extra time spent trying to make a living really cuts into a typical woman’s primping time.”
She goes on to say that “there are just so many hours in a day, my friend.”
“But thank you for noticing and scrutinising our arm hair. I’m sure the women of the world are relieved you’re not a hater,” she added.
She concludes by suggesting that maybe men should volunteer themselves for shaving their arms.
