The Pope was ‘unhappy’ about the two lesbian nuns who got married
The Pope was upset when he found out two former nuns had married in a civil ceremony in Italy.
Federica, 44, and Isabel, 40, married in northern Italy last month after a law was passed allowing same-sex couples legal recognition.
According to Deputy Secretary of State Archbishop Angelo Becciu, the pope wasn’t too happy for the newlyweds.
He tweeted: “How much sadness on the pope’s face when I read him the news of the two married ‘nuns’!”
The couple fell in love whilst serving as missionaries in Guinea-Bissau in West Africa for three years.
They formally cut off ties with the Vatican and Catholic Church so they could renounce their vows and marry each other.
The couple said: “There are many such cases where priests or nuns hide their relationships with men or women. We felt alone, more than that, we felt abandoned.”
They belonged to the Franciscan order, which follows the disciplines of Saint Francis of Assisi.
However, they were forced to give up their place in the order after they fell in love, as the Catechism continues to teach that homosexuality is ‘disordered’.
Last week, the leader of the Catholic church praised anti-gay marriage activists in Mexico for ‘defending the family’.
In April the Pope also released a long-awaited report on ‘the family’, which affirmed existing church teachings opposing gay equality and same-sex marriage.
In the document, the he says that gay people should receive “assistance” to bring them back to normality, and affirms there are “absolutely no grounds” for considering recognition of “homosexual unions”.
