The Flintstones have a ‘gay old time’ fighting for marriage equality in new comic
Fred and Wilma fight for same-sex marriage in the latest addition of The Flintstones comic.
We have all heard the theme tune – head on down to Bedrock and you’re sure to have a “gay old time” with TV’s first family, The Flintstones.
However, the latest addition of the prehistoric family’s new DC Comic takes this saying quite literally, as Fred and Wilma explore the idea of marriage – both gay and straight – for the first time.
Despite facing criticism from the neighbours and fellow cave-dwellers, the pair tie the knot – something many of their peers deem untraditional, as they believe a man should be able to impregnate as many women as possible.
Defying their friends, the Flintstones head off on a marriage retreat and on their way, Fred bumps into two members of his old tribe, Adam and Steve, outside an establishment named ‘Homo Erectus’ – so far, so subtle.
Fred and Wilma encourage the pair to get married, before attending their friends nuptials.
Unsurprisingly, Bedrock’s first same-sex marriage does go down well with the wider community, with one man challenging Fred on his support of the couple.
As Fred explains, without Adam and Steve – not Adam and Eve – his tribe would not have survived, as they provided extra care for the children as the other adults bred and hunted.
This ‘Gay Uncle’ theory suggests people evolved to be gay to ensure the safety and future of their tribe or family and existed in many early societies.
As Fred says, the existence of the “non-breeders” made the difference between life and death.
This is only the latest DC comic to feature same-sex characters, after it was recently revealed that Wonder Woman is bisexual.
The new Flintstones series – which aims to depict “real issues” – is written by Mark Russell, Steve Pugh and Chris Chuckry.
