Kelly Clarkson: ‘Everyone thought I was gay!’
The singer says she found rumours surrounding her sexuality “insulting to the gay community”.
Kelly Clarkson recently discussed getting married later in life, saying she felt judged for challenging the outdated cultural norms of her Texas upbringing.
“I’m from a small town in the South. Everyone thought I was gay ’cause I wasn’t married with kids already!” she said during the launch of her new children’s book last week.
“And I was like, ‘That’s kind of insulting to the gay community!’ But, especially in this day and age, I had a very high bar.”
However, the singer says she is happy that she waited until her thirties to marry husband Brandon Blackstock.
“I think the biggest thing is just getting married later in life…You change so much in your twenties,” Clarkson said.
“I mean, [my husband] got married at 21 in his first marriage, and they both went, ‘What?!’ It can be very hard to grow in the same way. Your twenties are all about growth, and giant [mistakes].”
Last year, the Miss Independent star – who is a parent to two young children and two step-children – said she would not care if any of her kids were LGBT.
“I mean, here’s what I hope for her: I just hope she finds love,” she said.
“It took me a while, man. And there was a lot of heartache throughout those years. You know, as long as she’s happy, I don’t care either way, and neither does my husband.
“And we have two other kids as well, and we don’t care either way for all of them,” she added.
“I’d be like, “Awesome! When do we meet him or her?”
“Honestly, it’s so funny, it doesn’t even register in my world as different. I don’t know why. But yeah, it doesn’t. I’m glad it doesn’t!”
