Pat McCrory mocked in full page HB2 newspaper ad on 60th birthday
The governor has been the driving force behind anti-trans laws in North Carolina.
Gov. Pat McCrory received a special mention on his 60th birthday today — but we’re not sure he’s going to like it.
A group called the Writers for a Progressive North Carolina took out a full page newspaper ad – headlined ‘HB2 U, PAT’ – in order to deliver a special message to the man behind the anti-trans HB2 law.
“Governor McCrory, we send you our best wishes today as you celebrate your 60th birthday,” the ad – featured in the Raleigh News & Observer – reads.
“But the real celebration will begin November 8th when North Carolina votes to move in a more progressive direction.”
This is the latest blow for McCrory, after another newspaper – The Charlotte Observer – ended its twenty-five year endorsement of the Governor.
The newspaper has supported the Republican throughout his political career since 1991, but tradition was recently broken as the paper opted to back Democrat Roy Cooper.
The loss of endorsement comes after, McCrory complained that he and his wife have lost lots of friends because of his anti-transgender law.
North Carolina has lost a string investment ventures over Governor McCrory’s decision to sign the contentious HB 2 – which voided all local ordinances protecting LGBT rights, banned transgender people from using their preferred bathroom, and permits businesses to discriminate against LGBT people on the grounds of religious belief.
HB 2 has been widely condemned, with North Carolina has seeing boycotts which have cost the state over $395 million.
Sports leagues, businesses, human rights groups and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton have all condemned the legislation.
