Trump investor Peter Thiel once wrote that date rape is just “belated regret”
Gay billionaire Peter Thiel who donated $1.25 million to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign described date rape as “belated regret” in a book he co-authored 10 years ago.
Thiel and his co-author, David Sacks, aim to delegitimise date rape allegations by saying definition of rape covers “seductions that are late regretted.”
In ‘The Diversity Myth: Multiculturalism and Political Intolerance on Campus’ the authors write that if a woman does not ‘realise’ she has been raped, then a man should not be held responsible.
The passage reportedly states: “But since a multicultural rape charge may indicate nothing more than belated regret, a woman might ‘realize’ that she had been ‘raped’ the next day or even many days later. Under these circumstances, it is unclear who should be held responsible. If the alcohol made both of them do it, then why should the woman’s consent be obviated any more than the man’s? Why is all blame placed on the man?”
Mr Thiel, a hedge fund manager and the founder of online payments company PayPal, is a committed Republican.
The alleged donation to Trump’s campaign comes despite a storm of controversy around the GOP, who has faced allegations of sexual assault from several women, following the release of a tape in which he bragged about liking to ‘grab them by the pussy’.
Thiel’s donation also comes despite the anti-LGBT policy stances of Trump’s campaign.
The billionaire made history earlier this year as the first openly gay speaker at the Republican National Convention.
In his speech he said: “Of course, every American has a unique identity. I am proud to be gay. I am proud to be a Republican. But most of all I am proud to be an American.”
