Pat McCrory has been ‘endorsed’ by a Virginia newspaper
Pat McCrory has gained the support of a newspaper, but it’s not the shiny endorsement he hoped for.
Virginia newspaper Roanoke Times wants supports McCrory’s place in office, because business has been flowing over into the neighbouring state.
The endorsement said: “We can point to specific and multiple ways he has helped the economy — our economy. North Carolina panicked and made a spectacle of itself by passing HB2, its so-called “bathroom bill.” In response, various companies and even sports leagues pulled events from the state.
“Three of those have wound up in Salem — the NCAA Division III men’s and women’s soccer championships, as well as the Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association football championship. That’s money in the bank for us.”
“It’s clear that Virginia would be best served if North Carolina re-elected McCrory,” the editorial concludes.
HB2 is a controversial bill that prevents transgender people from using bathrooms which correspond with their gender identity.
McCrory pushed the bill through the house and has since defended it, despite taking a huge financial toll on the economy in the state.
A number of high profile celebrities and companies have boycotted the state over the bill, including Paypal and Bruce Springsteen.
Attorney General Roy Cooper is challenging McCrory on his position and they’re currently even in the polls with Cooper at 49% and McCrory at 47%.
The Charlotte Observer, a North Carolina paper, backed McCrory for the past 25 years but announced it would no longer endorse the governor following his battle for HB2.
The bill has cost the state a mind blowing $395 million. The about includes costs of legal fees, business boycotts as well as celebrity boycotts.
