Is this picture Johnny Depp playing Dumbledore’s lover Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts?
Johnny Depp has been signed up to play Grindelwald in a Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel, it is reported.
According to Deadline, Depp shows up in a blink-and-you-miss-it scene in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts film starring Eddie Redmayne.
But he will be more heavily featured as Grindelwald, Dumbledore’s lover, in the sequel to be filmed in early 2017.
Hypable also reports that Depp will play the character, and that he appears for a split second at the beginning of the film, to be released later this month.
The site’s co-founder Andrew Sims tweets that “someone close to production” of the films has confirmed to him that Depp indeed will play Grindelwald.
The sequel will be directed by David Yates.
JK Rowling earlier this year hinted that the relationship between gay wizard characters Dumbledore and Grindelwald will be central to her upcoming Harry Potter spin-off films.
Rowling has penned the script for upcoming film Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, starring Eddie Redmayne, which is set in the same universe as the Harry Potter films but takes place in 1920s New York
The setting of the film rules out the return of many fan favourites from the Potter franchise, who were not alive in the 1920s – but some speculated speculating that the film could feature a young version of beloved headmaster Albus Dumbledore, who would have been alive during the time period.
