7 reasons Kate McKinnon should be your new queer crush

Kate McKinnon

Oh, 2016. It’s been a year of little ups and many downs, but for Kate McKinnon, it’s really shaping up to be her year. Just as 2015 was Amy Schumer’s, McKinnon has proven she is this year’s new comedy queen.

Never heard of her? Don’t worry neither had we until she burst onto our radar with her stellar Hillary Clinton impression on Saturday Night Live. The 32-year-old New York state native has long been known for her celebrity impressions but the recent US election saw her take hold of Amy Poehler’s Clinton and make it her own. Many have revered her weekly sketches with Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump, so much so McKinnon won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work earlier this year. In other words, she’s a pretty big deal.

So it’s no surprise we’ve formed a bit of a crush of her here at PinkNews, and below are five reasons why you will too.

1. She has always been open about her sexuality

Ever since her first appearance on The Big Gay Sketch Show, McKinnon has owned her lesbian status. In 2012 she became the first openly gay cast member of Saturday Night Live. No small feat.

2. She’s the butch Justin Bieber of your dreams

We’ll take this over the real version any day.

3. She is ~available~

McKinnon and long-term love, musical theatre actress Marla Mindelle split up quietly earlier this year. So now we can all go and write fan fiction about meeting her and falling in love.

4. She nails every single impression

From Hillary Clinton to Ellen DeGeneres, Martha Stewart to Mary Berry, McKinnon is the gold standard of celebrity impressions. Let’s just say she’s be pretty great at role playing …

5. She’s hilarious

With any SNL cast member this is a given, but McKinnon’s impressions along with her characters and ability to make other cast members break is guaranteed great viewing. You know there will never be a dull moment between the two of you.

6. She. Can. Sing.

McKinnon stole hearts on the latest episode of SNL, playing the late Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ while in her Clinton getup. Yep, she’s good at everything.

7. She completely stole the show in the remake of Ghostbusters

And that’s no simple thing to do alongside fellow comedy legends, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones.
