Sia and Kylie Minogue throw their weight behind equal marriage at ARIAs
Sia and Kylie Minogue have come out strongly in favour of same-sex marriage in Australia.
The pair gave the huge show of support for equality at the ARIA Awards, Australia’s biggest music awards ceremony.
The show came just two weeks after the Senate in Australia blocked a public vote, or plebiscite, on the issue.
Sia gave up her spot at the ARIA Awards to Angie Greene, a marriage equality campaigner, who took to the stage on her behalf to collec her female artist of the year award.
Greene took the stage, saying: “A bit outrageously Sia asked me to accept this award on behalf of Australian marriage equality.”
She added that Sia had asked her to accept it on behalf of “every single non-hetero and gender-diverse person, who can currently not marry the person that they love in this country”.
The campaigner also got a standing ovation for her words.
Kylie Minogue and her fiance Joshua Sasse also spoke out on equality, wearing ‘Say I Do Down Under’ t-shirts, and introducing Troye Sivan’s performance.
“You have a voice. If we all stand together, we can bring Australia back on the right side of history and make 2017 the year that we all say, ‘I do’, Down Under,” said Sasse.
LGBT advocate and singer, Troye Sivan picked up an award for Song of the Year for his single, Youth, and dedicated it to LGBT+ youth.
Minogue earlier this year said Sasse is “so adamant” that same-sex marriage comes to Australia.
The couple are planning a Melbourne wedding, but have said they won’t marry until all Australian couples can.
