Gay rap star Cakes Da Killa: I’m not going to cry over the Trump presidency
Out gay rap artist, Cakes Da Killa has opened up about what he makes of the upcoming Trump presidency and said he isn’t more worried than he was before.
The rap artist caught up with iNews to say he feels a threat to his personal safety existed before, and it still does.
He said: “I don’t feel like my personal safety is any more under threat now than before… I think a lot of liberal white people have been living in a bubble, people who might call themselves queer, and tell the world they have black friends.
“People are associating one person – Trump – with all these negative things, but we know it’s not him, an individual; it’s systematic.”
“I’m not going to sit here and cry because Trump is in office; I refuse,” he adds.
“For gay people, clubs are our version of church,” Cakes said of the gay community. “It’s here you meet people: friends and family, a place to express yourself, to not feel judged.”
“I do realise now what we’re doing,” he says of other queer artists.
“As openly gay artists of colour, we’re shifting culture, society and music, too. When I was growing up, doing what we do would’ve been unheard of. I do pat myself back, I’m a pioneer, honey,” he continues.
