Loose Women anger fans in ‘gay best friend’ homophobia row
Loose Women released a Facebook post asking “Should every woman have a gay best friend?” Let’s just say it has not gone down well…
There are now over 800 comments on the post where people are condemning the show for being homophobic.
The post said: “A new study has found that becoming friends with gay men may be a key part of women’s ‘mating strategies’ by making them less threatening to other women – and more appealing to straight men.
“Do you think every woman should have a male gay best friend? Why do you think a friendship between a woman and a gay man is so special?”
One twitter user made the point that this question would never have been asked if it was about a different stereotype.
Another accused Loose Women of rendering gay men to being an “accessory”.
Anthony Proctor said: “Please delete this question. This is disgusting and should not be endorsed by a national TV programme. You should be ashamed of yourself. I’m no woman’s ‘gay best friend’. My sexuality has nothing to do with my friendship with anyone.”
Some responded to the insensitive post with satire, Nigel Wilson said: “I’d love a gay best friend to add to my collection. Obviously I already have “man human friend” and “woman human friend”, but I’ve also got, and I don’t mean to show off, “black friend” and “disabled friend” and even a “foreign friend” would you believe?!
I like to keep them on a shelf next to my Sylvanian families and thimbles I’ve collected from different counties.”

Dear @loosewomen – Replace the word “gay” with any of following; Muslim, Jewish, Trans, Black…
Then ask, how does that question sound? pic.twitter.com/VElOwyYGAe

@seafoalmusic @loosewomen I’m so glad I can go to the gay best friend store and purchase a gay man. I’d never be able to mate without one.

@loosewomen I am not an accessory
