Gay couple in custody after trying to buy three day old baby
A gay couple are in custody with a woman they attempted to buy a three day old baby from.
The woman was ready to collect €10,000 (around £8,300 or $8,800) in exchanging for handing the newborn baby over in Malaga, Spain, according to reports.
It later was alleged that the gay couple had paid the woman to be their surrogate mother, with one of the men being its biological father.
When police officers discovered the incident they arrested all three adults and took the baby into care, as such transactions are illegal in Spain.
The artificial insemination is said to have taken place in a clinic in Malaga.
The mother is reported to have gone through the pregnancy on the expectation of the fee for handing the baby over to its biological father and his male partner.
Quizzed about the situation afterwards, the birth mother claimed the baby had been tragically stillborn and its body donated to science.
However no record could be found of such a tragedy, and when the hospital where the baby had been born was contacted, they said the baby had been born healthy.
A spokesman for the Spanish Civil Guard said: “We proceeded to the arrest of the three involved in the sale of the girl, suspected of a crime against Family Relationships for Alteration of Paternity, State or Condition Minor.
“The child has been placed under the protection of the Social Services of the Government of Andalusia.”
All three remain in custody.
