This student decided to take on her tutor over the history of the Stonewall riots, and the reaction was amazing
Earlier this month a Tumblr user posted a photo of feedback she had received on a university essay – and the reaction was amazing.
Huxsir was unimpressed at the comments made by her tutor, which questioned the accuracy of a statement she made about the involvement of black trans women in the Stonewall riots – the famous LGBT demonstrations that took place in New York City in 1969.
In a spidery red scrawl, the academic had written “Where did you source this inaccuracy?”. They also appeared to insert the words “Mafia-owned” to describe the Stonewall Inn.
There have been accusations that black trans women have been largely overlooked as key players in the riots.
The Tumblr user then took it upon herself to politely clarify the point with her tutor in an email also posted online.
She has since also posted her tutor’s response.
The original post has now gone viral, after being picked up and featured by Buzzfeed. It has received almost 50,000 notes, with other users praising Huxsir for her knowledge of the subject.
Last year thousands of LGBT people pledged to boycot a film about the Stonewall riots because the main character was a white gay man.
It prompeted veteran gay rights activist Larry Kramer to respond angrily against the boycott.
