Republicans compare Trump to Christ…then quickly deny it
The Republican National Committee has denied it released a Christmas message where it compared the election of President-elect Donald Trump with the birth of Jesus.
The statement was released by the party for Christmas from RNC chairman Reince Priebus and Co-chair Sharon Day.
It said: “Over two millennia ago, a new hope was born into the world, a Savior who would offer the promise of salvation to all mankind.
“Just as the three wise men did on that night, this Christmas heralds a time to celebrate the good news of a new King.”
The statement quickly drew criticism from a number of people, who described it as comparing Trump to a “king” as insulting.
However, the GOP quickly claimed it had never compared Trump to Jesus and that it didn’t believe anyone would have read it that way.
Incoming White House Press Secretary, Sean Spicer, told BuzzFeed that to imply the RNC had made the comparison was offensive.
“I hope you are kidding. Christ is the King in the Christian faith,” he said.
“To ask this on Christmas is frankly offensive.”
He also took to Twitter to reiterate the response.
Recently, it was revealed that Trump’s transition team had demanded a list of progressive State Department staff for what is expected to be a purge.
