Bisexual governor Kate Brown is leading Oregon lawmakers in fight against Trump
The first openly LGBT governor, Democrat Kate Brown, has issues an executive order that states that Oregon would refuse to participate in Trump’s ban on refugees and travellers from Muslim majority countries from entering America.
Brown said a statement: “I will uphold the civil and human rights of all who call Oregon home. It is also my duty to prevent any undue harm to our economy and ensure the ability of Oregonians to support their families.
“These new policies from the White House show no regard for the values Oregonians believe in or the economic realities Oregon faces.”
Oregon became the first “sanctuary state” in 1987 after it banned law enforcement from using state resources to uncover undocumented immigrants.
The order, enforced by Brown and a team of lawmakers, adds to the current policy as as law-abiding immigrants are not criminalised. State agencies are also prevented from creating a faith-based registry.
Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum was called upon by Brown to stand alongside states including New York, Virginia, Massachusetts and Minnesota and take legal action against the order executed by Trump.
Brown added: “In Oregon, where thousands have fought for and demanded equality, we can not and will not retreat. As Governor, I will uphold the civil and human rights of all who call Oregon home.
“My staff is studying the recent Executive Orders to determine what effects they may have on Oregonians, and I will explore options to keep Oregon a safe place for everyone.”
“Now, more than ever, we must stand together guided by the enduring belief in freedom, liberty, and justice for all and make our voices heard.”
She became the first out LGB person to win election as governor of a US state.
The Democrat was first sworn in as Governor in Oregon in 2015 with just five days’ notice, drafted in after the resignation of Governor John Kitzhaber.
After winning praise for her level-headed approach, Governor Brown vowed to stand for election to carry on in the role.
