Watch: The beautiful lesbian fairytale Disney would never make
An aspiring animator has created a fairytale featuring a lesbian ice queen – and it’s everything we want it to be.
YouTube animators Olly Pike (Pop’n’Olly) is behind the clip, titled The Ice Queen and her Wife – based on a princess who bears a striking resemblance to Elsa from Disney’s Frozen.
But unlike Elsa, this ice queen lives in a castle “with her beautiful wife” Summer, using her ice powers to create gifts for her beloved.
In the tale, which fans are hailing as an unofficial sequel to Frozen, the ice queen’s wife is blessed with a power to make plants flower, with the two powers perfectly complementing eachother.
The story takes a tragic twist when the couple are torn apart by bigoted ‘anti-magic’ locals who break them up out of fear.
Creator Olly Pike said: “It’s sad to think that the heartache found in our story is the reality for so many LGBT+ couples across the globe.
“These people are forced to keep their relationships/sexuality secret or risk imprisonment or even death in certain places.
“We hope our story highlights how unfair and tragic it is to dictate whom may love whom.
“Our stories are aimed at a younger audience in the hope that we can educate them about equality and diversity, in order to build a kinder, more accepting society for future generations.”
The video is a subtle response to an internet campaign for Disney to give Elsa a girlfriend.
Frozen stars Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel previously spoke out on the issue, with Bell saying: “Whatever Elsa wants to do is up to her, and it’s up to us to support her.”
Menzel left the door open on the issue of Elsa’s sexuality amid planning for a Frozen sequel, adding: “I cannot confirm or deny… if I tell you I would have to kill you! I think in Frozen 1 she was young, so she’s still figuring stuff out.”
It’s not Pike’s first foray into LGBT fairytales, creating previous works Jamie, Prince Henry and Princess Penny & the Pea.
