Watch a Californian Glory Hole get filled for the first time in a decade
A ‘Glory Hole’ in a Californian lake has begun taking in water due to recent storms in the state.
Record rainfall so far this year has seen Lake Berryessa almost overflowing for the first time in ten years, meaning the spillway has taken on water to prevent flooding in the area.
Known officially as the Monticello Dam Morning Glory Spillway, locals commonly refer to it as the Glory Hole.
Resident Dianna Englebrecht said: “The fact that the lake is finally going to fill up again is special.
“The power, the energy of it [the Glory Hole], it’s something you don’t see every day.”
According to local news outlet NBC 4, the Glory Hole works like a drain in a sink but sits at the top of the lake rather than the bottom.
When water levels get too high, water flows down the spillway and comes out at the bottom of the dam. This helps to stop it overflowing.
