Ellen DeGeneres just paid for an entire class of high school students to go to college (VIDEO)
Ellen DeGeneres has given away her biggest gift ever on her show, sending an entire class of underprivileged kids to college.
The gift, worth $1.6 million, was given away in collaboration with Walmart, to the class of 2017 at the Summit Academy in Brooklyn, New York.
The Charter School is located in the area of Brooklyn where just four percent of people on average go to college, and 28 percent of young people live in poverty.
Joined by two of the teachers from the school, and the entire senior class, Ellen gives away the gift to the entire class of 41 students.
Students speaking to Ellen say all they want is the opportunity to go to college, and to be an inspiration to their families or younger siblings.
“Our mission is for them to go to college, excel in college and graduate from college. Now we don’t have any obstacles stopping them,” Summit Academy principal Cheryl Lundy Swift said.
“This means the sky is the limit.”
The school saw 93 percent of students from the class of 2016 find their way into college programmes.
Naturally, the kids, many from low-income backgrounds, can’t believe what they hear when the famed host announces the gift.
