Laverne Cox put this anti-trans activist in place and it’s perfect
Laverne Cox has put an anti-trans activist in their place with the help of Mara Keisling.
Cox and Keisling, who is the executive director for the National Centre for Transgender Equality, appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball to go face to face with Travis Weber.
Weber is a right-wing activist who was confident, before being confronted by these two strong ladies.
When talking about the controversial bathroom debate, host Chris Matthews asked Weber what bathroom he believed Cox should use.
Weber stumbled over his words, which he had to say to Cox’s face, but managed to put together a defence that insisted teen girls would “of course be harmed” if people with male genitalia were allowed in female bathrooms.
Cox eloquently proceeded to destroy Weber with an evidence-backed response that hit the nail on the head.
The Orange is the New Black star said: “I think it’s important, when we have conversations with and about transgender people, that we do not reduce us to body parts. We are more than the sum of our parts.
“It’s so deeply objectifying and dehumanising to talk about trans people and reduce us to body parts. That is really disturbing.”
Cox went on to look at hard evidence that plays into the ongoing debate.
“We need to look at the evidence – we need to look at the hundreds of localities all over the country that have public accommodations protections, and that’s really what we’re talking about, for trans people.
“Everything that he’s claiming happens, actually doesn’t happen,” she said. “Instead, trans people feel as if they have a right to exist in society.”
Cox finished on a hard hitting point about her own existence as a trans person.
“My transition was about me existing in public space and thriving in society,” she explained. “Because I was able to do that, I’ve been able to thrive.
“That’s all we want.”
