Gay Britain’s Got Talent winner: people shouldn’t have to ‘come out’

Gay Britain’s Got Talent winner Jamie Lambert has said people in the public eye shouldn’t have to come out.

The 26-year-old, from operatic boy band Collabro, revealed he was gay after appearing on the show in 2014.

At the time he told The Sun that he already been out before the show, but “no-one asked” if he was gay, and so it wasn’t known.

Asked for his advice on people coming out in the public eye, he told PinkNews: “I would say don’t ‘come out’.

“Everyone always wants a coming out story. Just be you.

“If someone asks the question, tell them the truth. You are always going to be the only constant in your life.

“When I go to bed at night I like to think I’m comfortable with who I am. Be you. Do you.”

Collabro, who have a new album, Home, out now, won the show in 2014 and previously appeared on the cover of Gay Times magazine.

He told PinkNews: “I will always try my absolute best to work on the behalf of the LGBT community.

“Until we can live in a world where our community is respected equally and not looked upon as ‘tolerated’, everyone has a responsibility to speak out and help.”

The star also revealed that the band is no longer in contact with music mogul Simon Cowell after being dropped by Syco last January.

Back in 2014 he told The Sun that he had “nothing to hide” about his sexuality and that the rest of Collabro had known he is gay, but that it’s “only an aspect” of who he is.

“No-one asked,” he told the paper.

“I remember when Stephen Gately from Boyzone came out and it was a really massive deal. But I think nowadays it’s about being comfortable in your own skin and comfortable with who you fall in love with. It doesn’t make a difference whether it’s with a man or a woman.”

He added: “It’s not all of who I am. I would hate for people to see me as ‘the gay one’, rather than the one who sings that line.”
