A man has died after being robbed and stabbed near a gay cruising ground in Amsterdam.

The man, described as Eastern European by authorities, was stabbed in the Oosterpark on Friday, and died of his injuries later that night.

Police are appealing for witnesses and say that there were four suspects spotted near the Tropenmuseum the same night.

According to a report in the Volkskrant newspaper, the incident took place at 9pm in an area of the park typically used as a cruising ground by gay men.

Authorities have said that they are not currently treating the stabbing as a hate crime.

“At the moment we assume that he is the victim of a mugging that got out of hand”, said a police spokesperson.

Stabbed several times, the victim had his possessions stolen. He was unconscious when police discovered him, making it difficult for him to be identified.

He was eventually identified as a 33-year-old Rotterdam resident.
