Kristen Stewart says she feels it was ‘important’ for her to open up about her sexuality
Kristen Stewart has said that she initially wanted to keep her sexual orientation a secret but that she felt that she had an obligation to open up about it.
Stewart hosted SNL in February, taking aim at President Trump, but also saying “I’m so gay, dude”.
Rewind to 2015, when the actor opened up about her sexuality for the first time, saying “Google me, I’m not hiding”.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, she now says: “I wasn’t hiding anything… I didn’t talk about my first relationships that went public because I wanted things that are mine to be mine.”
She goes on to say that she rejected the idea of constantly being in the public eye through tabloids and gossip websites.
But that she eventually said she realised that coming out might have a positive impact on others.
“I hated it that details of my life were being turned into a commodity and peddled around the world,” she said.
“But considering I had so many eyes on me, I suddenly realised [my private life] affects a greater number of people than just me. It was an opportunity to surrender a bit of what was mine, to make even one other person feel good about themselves.”
Going on, the star recognises that walking “outside holding someone’s hand” is going to be picked up in the media.
“When I was dating Rob, the public were the enemy—and that is no way to live. [Coming out] wasn’t this grand statement, ‘I was so confused! Now I’ve realised who I am!’ I have not been struggling. It just seemed important, and topical.”
Stewart last year said that she is “happier” after going public about her sexuality.
She also discussed her relationship with actor Robert Pattinson – describing their pairing as a “product”.
The Twilight co-stars began dating in 2008, before splitting in 2014, with the actress claiming the relationship became “not real life”
Before her SNL appearance during which she said “I’m so gay, dude”, Stewart hit out at people attempting to label her as a lesbian for dating women.
