RuPaul receives homophobic abuse after wedding partner of 23 years
Drag icon RuPaul has received homophobic abuse after revealing he is married to his partner of more than two decades.
The drag legend opened up about having a secret wedding to his partner in January.
Last week the first pictures emerged of the RuPaul’s Drag Race host with his long-term partner, Georges LeBar.
Now social media users have taken to sending abusive messages.
One wrote: “Donald Trump will end this liberal gay agenda BS,” in a post.
“Whoever gives a f*** about him or her or whatever the fuck it is should kill themselves”, another pondered.
Another comment read: “Freaks, this shit should not be glorified.”
Drag Race returns later this month – but not where you might expect it.
The TV host, drag legend, author and performer has ignored the abuse.
Ru responded to the mainly positive reaction, writing: “Thank you all for the love & kindness. ‘I cry not for myself, but for those who never felt the joy we felt’~The Supremes ‘I Hear A Symphony’”
Mr LeBar, Ru’s new husband, is a Wyoming rancher and had managed to stay out of the public eye for 23 years before the pair were snapped by paparazzi together.
Most of the press coverage identified Mr LeBar as RuPaul’s “boyfriend”, but in an appearance on Hollywood Today, RuPaul dropped a bombshell by revealing they had gotten married in secret earlier this year.
When host and drag race judge Ross Matthews asked if they had any wedding plans, RuPaul volunteered: “You know what? I’ve never said this on television before, but we are married. I’ve never said it before!”
He explained: “We got married, actually, on our 23rd anniversary. I met him on the dancefloor at Limelight in 1994 on his birthday, so we got married on his birthday, the anniversary of when we met, this year in January.
“We wanted to do it… we were looking into it for tax breaks and financial things.”
Of his husband, RuPaul explained: “He’s a great guy, he doesn’t care about showbiz at all. He couldn’t care less. When [the paparazzi] caught us, we were in New York
“Most of the time he’s on the ranch in Wyoming. He has a 6,000-acre ranch, but when we have a chance to do anything, we want to go somewhere fabulous like Maui or New York because… god bless you Wyoming, but it’s very boring and the most isolated place on Earth.
“When I go there, I dress up in Western wear but nobody cares! I dress up in the most gorgeous Western outfits.”
Film of RuPaul’s life on the way
Star Wars director JJ Abrams’ production company is developing a TV show based on the life of drag artist RuPaul.
RuPaul Charles, 56, rose from humble beginnings to become the world’s biggest drag star, dueting with Elton John and helming reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race.
According to Deadline, JJ Abrams’ production company Bad Robot Productions is behind the new comedy-drama project, based on RuPaul’s rise from the New York nightclub scene.
RuPaul is reportedly signed on as an executive producer alongside Abrams and Bad Robot exec Ben Stephenson. World of Wonder’s Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, and Tom Campbell are also signed on.
The show, early in development, is expected to be put on the market soon.
