JJ Abrams developing a TV show based on RuPaul’s life
Star Wars director JJ Abrams’ production company is developing a TV show based on the life of drag artist RuPaul.
RuPaul Charles, 56, rose from humble beginnings to become the world’s biggest drag star, dueting with Elton John and helming reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race.
According to Deadline, JJ Abrams’ production company Bad Robot Productions is behind the new comedy-drama project, based on RuPaul’s rise from the New York nightclub scene.
RuPaul is reportedly signed on as an executive producer alongside Abrams and Bad Robot exec Ben Stephenson. World of Wonder’s Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, and Tom Campbell are also signed on.
The show, early in development, is expected to be put on the market soon.
The ‘Supermodel’ singer last week revealed he is married to his partner of more than two decades – after a secret wedding in January.
When Hollywood Today host Ross Matthews asked if they had any wedding plans, RuPaul revealed: “You know what? I’ve never said this on television before, but we are married. I’ve never said it before!”
He explained: “We got married, actually, on our 23rd anniversary. I met him on the dancefloor at Limelight in 1994 on his birthday, so we got married on his birthday, the anniversary of when we met, this year in January.
“We wanted to do it… we were looking into it for tax breaks and financial things.”
Of his husband, RuPaul explained: “He’s a great guy, he doesn’t care about showbiz at all. He couldn’t care less. When [the paparazzi] caught us, we were in New York
“Most of the time he’s on the ranch in Wyoming. He has a 6,000 acre ranch, but when we have a chance to do anything, we want to go somewhere fabulous like Maui or New York because… god bless you Wyoming, but it’s very boring and the most isolated place on Earth.
“When I go there, I dress up in Western wear but nobody cares! I dress up in the most gorgeous Western outfits.”
