Bates Motel main character has first gay kiss – then reveals he’s been having sex with men for years
The main character of the hit show Bates Motel has surprised and delighted fans with a gay kiss – and it has been revealed it wasn’t his first.
Bates Motel, the Emmy Award-nominated programme which serves as a prequel to classic horror film Psycho, is approaching the end of its fifth season.
Having killed his mother Norma two years ago, at the end of the last season, Norman Bates – played by Freddie Highmore – heads to the White Horse bar in the persona of his dead mother.
He kisses a man at the bar, and the audience finds out Norman has been having sex with men he meets at the White Horse for years while imagining himself to be Norma.
Speaking to TV news site TVLine, creator Kerry Ehrin said: “Clearly, Norman’s sexuality is all over the place. It’s not super defined.
“It made sense to us that this would’ve happened with him – many times, probably.”
When asked how long Norman had been having sex with men, co-creator Carlton Cuse explained: “We don’t define it.
“But we suggest that this is kind of what’s been happening in the couple of years that have passed since Norma has died.”
Despite Rihanna starring in the episode as Marion Crane, the woman murdered in the 1960 film’s iconic shower scene, this was the scene which got people talking.
And the co-creators’ remarks mean fans can probably look forward to some more same-sex smooching from the show’s leading man.
The kiss came after a Disney cartoon featured same-sex kisses earlier this year.
