Justin Trudeau, Ellen DeGeneres join the Queen in paying tribute after London terror attack
As details of the horror on the streets of London emerged yesterday, celebrities joined politicians and public figures in paying tribute.
Three people were killed, along with the attacker, in Wednesday’s attack, close to the Houses of Parliament.
It’s believed the assailant drove a car into pedestrians on Westminster bridge, before running into the courtyard of parliament and stabbing a police officer.
PC Keith Palmer, 48, was stabbed as he tried to stop the attacker, and has subsequently died.
Another 29 people needed hospital treatment, of whom seven remain critically injured, according to the BBC.
The Queen has sent her sympathies, releasing a statement saying: “My thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with all those who have been affected by yesterday’s awful violence.
“I know I speak for everyone in expressing my enduring thanks and admiration for the members of the Metropolitan Police service and all who work so selflessly to help and protect others.”
British Prime Minister Theresa May told MPs: “We will never waver in the face of terrorism” and paid tribute to the killed officer.
Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, gave his full support to Britain in the wake of the attack.
“On behalf of all Canadians, I offer our full support to Prime Minister May and to the people of the United Kingdom,” his statement noted.
“We stand ready to offer all possible assistance to the British government, to do what we can to bring to justice those responsible for this heinous act.”
Ellen DeGeneres took to Twitter as the news came in, writing: “Sending love to everyone in London.”
Out gay actor George Takei posted on Facebook in tribute to those lost and injured in the attack.
He wrote: “I want to give a special acknowledgement to the victims of the horrific attack in London. I travel often across the Pond, and London is among my favorite places to be. My heart aches that this is happened, but swelled also when a friend showed me how London responded, as this headline exemplified. We all stand against terror of any kind. But it cannot defeat us.”
Singer P!nk wrote: “I’ve just this second turned on the news. My heart is hurting for the people in London who have been affected by yet another tragedy.”
Actor Josh Gad, who stars as Le Feo in the new Beauty and the Beast film, said: “I am so horrified and heartbroken by the events in #london and #parliament. Please be safe everyone!!!”
British One Direction star Niall Horan also urged Londoners to “stay safe”.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, recorded a video message, saying “London is the greatest city in the world” as he caled for Londoners to unite following the attack.
