Sandwich shop says ‘poof’ menu wasn’t meant to offend anyone
A sandwich shop in Auckland, New Zealand has apologised, saying a menu item with the word “poof” in it wasn’t meant to offend.
Bun Mee Kiwi opened for the first time last weekend, but came under fire for the menu item.
It offered extra jalapeno peppers before stating: “Unless you’re a poof”.
One Facebook user wrote: “On what planet and in what century do you think it would be any kind of good idea for your new business to put a homophobic slur on your menu? … Totally pathetic.”
But the owners of the restaurant responded to say: “Woah woah woah people relaxxx.. if the word poof is offensive we will find a more appropriate word… We will remedy so relaxxxx please help us come up with a more PC appropriate word but it can’t be Sissy thanks and expect our apologies…. Sorry Lisa we will sort [sic].”
Since the apology, the store has changed the menu.
But owners gave an interesting reason for why they decided to include the slur in the first place.
The restaurant now offers jalapeno peppers “unless you can’t handle the jandal”.
Along with a post of the new menu, the store wrote on Facebook: “Change is made apologies again if the word poof was offensive…. the in store menu board will be changed in the next few days also … remember life’s too short for S#!t food … so get in and try a Bun Mee today… No S#!t it will change your life”.
Store manager John Baxter told Gaynz.co.nz: “Obviously we stirred a few people the wrong way, that context in which it was used was not supposed to offend anyone so we’ve done our best to remedy and move forward.
“We’re from a Polynesian background and so it’s not offensive to us.”
Also this month, a restaurant owner denied “threatening” trans people with a sign attacking “transgender bathrooms”.
Steak and Catfish Barn in Oklahoma City has come under fire on social media for the sign, proudly displayed in the restaurant.
It says: “We do not have a transgender bathroom. So don’t be caught in the wrong one. Thank you. Bob.”
Bob Warner, the owner of the restaurant, spoke out to defend the sign.
He claimed the sign was a ‘warning’ to trans people because of the restaurant’s clients and would ‘protect’ them.
Mr Warner told NewsChannel4: “We have a lot of redneck guys that come in here, truck drivers and everything.
“They’re big husky guys, and I said ‘Man alive! If their wife or their little girl walked in that bathroom and a man followed them in there, I wouldn’t have a restaurant’.”
He added that he doesn’t mind which bathroom transgender people use as long as they are “dressed appropriately”.
Earlier this year a restaurant defended a policy restricting a ‘date night’ offer to opposite-sex couples.
The Lake Restaurant in Brakpan, South Africa advertises a special Thursday night offer exclusively for couples. But same-sex couples weren’t allowed to take advantage.
